150 Years of Gärtnerplatztheater
"To the delight and prosperity of the people" was the carpenter's saying at the topping-out ceremony of the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich in 1865. Since then, it has remained committed to the people. No other theatre in the city has developed such a close relationship with its audience. While it was truly the long-awaited people's theatre for the citizens of Munich at its opening, the repertoire has continuously evolved over the last 150 years: from farce and rural comedy to operetta and musical, as well as ballet and contemporary opera.
This stylistic diversity is reflected in the eventful history of the building, where such different figures as Eleonora Duse and Johannes Heesters, Fritz Fischer and Karl Valentin have played a significant role. The curator and designer have transformed this into a vibrant piece of theatre history, an exhibition for all the senses to celebrate the 150th anniversary.
