THE HISTORY OF EUROPE – AS TOLD BY ITS THEATRES

A EU Exhibition Project (2015–2017) in Warsaw, Copenhagen, Vienna, Munich, Ljubljana, and London

For the first time, six European theatre museums have collaboratively conceived an exhibition that will be showcased from 2015 to 2017 across various institutions in Warsaw, Copenhagen, Vienna, Munich, Ljubljana, and London. The exhibition will be on display at the German Theatre Museum in Munich from May to October 2016.

The exhibition features over 250 exhibits that illustrate how the history of Europe, from antiquity to the present day, is reflected in the theatre forms and buildings of various epochs. It is divided into nine thematic sections that do not follow a strictly chronological order but rather adopt a thematic perspective:

  1. Impulses from the Mediterranean
  2. The Power of Religion
  3. Society and Its Architecture
  4. Aesthetics & Technology
  5. The Nation
  6. Fire!
  7. Overcoming Borders
  8. War
  9. Democracy

This multifaceted approach highlights the role of theatre in shaping and reflecting the cultural and historical contexts of Europe.
