Goethe's Drama on Stage
Who – Where – What – these are three fundamental questions that anyone looking to bring Goethe's Faust to the stage must confront.
Who plays the lead roles of Faust, Mephisto, and Gretchen? Is the existing ensemble large and diverse enough to fill all the other roles?
Where does the drama take place? A striking feature of Goethe's Faust is the rapid changes in location, such as Heaven, the cramped study, and the open landscape before the city gate. How can this be achieved on stage? The answers from theatre makers are partly due to technical developments, but they are also closely tied to aesthetic movements, the imagination, and the worldview of directors and their set designers.
What will be performed? This is also a fundamental question, even in connection with this iconic text by Goethe.
Character portraits, historical audio recordings, spatial concepts, and a parcours featuring original models, production books, and much more illustrate the diversity of creative responses that have been discovered throughout the history of the production to this day.
