The Influence of Munich Jugendstil on Theatre
The turn of the century marked a transformation in theatrical aesthetics: across artistic disciplines, calls for reform in stagecraft grew louder. The rapid changes around 1900 reshaped visual perception and spatial awareness. The pursuit of an exact reproduction of reality on stage no longer reflected the spirit of the times.
Under the influence of the Jugendstil movement, Munich became a hub for theatre reform. Artists like Richard Riemerschmid, Fritz Erler, and Thomas Theodor Heine fueled the discourse of stage innovators. The Munich Artists' Theatre, opened in 1908 on Theresienhöhe, became a stylistic milestone for the rise of modernity. Its unique relief stage was the product of collaboration between a new generation of artists and the experienced architect Max Littmann. Curtain up!
"The artistic questions of the stage are old problems, but they must not disappear from the discussion until they have found their solution."
– Max Littmann: Artistic Questions of the Stage, 1907
