Ruth Walz (1941) is a German photographer whose images of groundbreaking productions have shaped our perception of theatre for five decades. She doesn't merely capture performances but follows the rehearsal process, revealing what happens behind the scenes. Her photographs depict captivating moments, offering a glimpse of an elusive present made tangible.
The optical technique of double exposure is, in a metaphorical sense, pivotal to this exhibition, as the still-actively working artist simultaneously shifts the focus to her long-time companions. "Double Exposure" is both an echo and a tribute: her images are displayed in dialogue with photographs by her colleague and friend Abisag Tüllmann (1935-1996), showcasing legendary works of costume designer Moidele Bickel (1937-2016) and stage designer Karl-Ernst Herrmann (1936-2018), whose estate has been preserved in the Deutsches Theatermuseum since 2023.
