THEATRE.BUILD.EFFECTS!

The architect Max Littmann and Munich during the time of Prince Regent.

The architect Max Littmann (1862-1931) built three theatres in Munich: the Prinzregententheater and the Schauspielhaus (now the home of the Münchner Kammerspiele) in 1901, and the Künstlertheater in the exhibition park at Theresienhöhe in 1908. This exhibition focuses on Max Littmann, who designed numerous other theatre buildings, such as the Berliner Schiller-Theater and the Stuttgarter Hoftheater. However, the presentation will also expand to other architectural projects in Munich that Littmann successfully realised in harmony with his time: the cosmopolitan, urban consumption temples “Hermann Tietz” (later “Hertie”) and “Oberpollinger,” as well as the charming architectural ensemble in “Platzl” featuring the world-famous Hofbräuhaus. Littmann’s signature style is characterised by the theatrical effects evident in these Munich buildings.

The exhibition features original models and plans by Max Littmann, along with numerous historical photographs and postcards that capture the aura of that era. An exciting chapter of Munich’s history, which may be unfamiliar to many, is presented in an engaging and entertaining manner.
